Titanium isn’t just lightweight—it’s tough, corrosion-resistant, and meant to perform where other metals fail. That’s why forging titanium is the solution for applications that demand high strength without the added weight. It holds up in extreme temperatures, shrugs off chemical exposure, and maintains its structural integrity in some of the most punishing environments on and above Earth. Our Titanium Forging Capabilities Forging titanium starts with understanding the right grade for the job. At Canton Drop Forge, we work with a range of commercially pure and alpha-beta titanium alloys to meet the performance requirements of demanding applications.   Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5) The most widely used titanium alloy, valued for its high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and weldability. Ideal for aerospace, military, and industrial components. Ti-6Al-4V ELI (Grade 23) A lower interstitial version of Grade 5, this alloy offers superior fracture toughness and biocompatibility. Commonly used in medical implants and cryogenic applications. Grade 2 CP Titanium A commercially pure titanium known for excellent corrosion resistance, especially in marine and chemical environments. Preferred when moderate strength and maximum corrosion resistance are key. Other Grades Available on Request Not every application fits a standard alloy. Our team can source and forge titanium across a broader spectrum of grades based on your engineering requirements.   Tell us what you need; we’ll align the material to your spec, and shape it to perform.   How We Forge Titanium That Performs Titanium isn’t forgiving—and neither are the applications it’s forged for. That’s why... --- ### Stainless Steel Forging - Published: 2025-03-27 - Modified: 2025-03-27 - URL: https://cantondropforge.com/forging-materials/stainless-steel/ Why Stainless Steel Forging Outperforms Other Methods When strength, corrosion resistance, and heat tolerance are non-negotiable, forged stainless steel provides unmatched performance and quality for projects. Unlike common casting or machining, forging stainless steel refines the grain structure, enhancing toughness, fatigue resistance, and overall durability—which is why it's the preferred choice for critical applications across industries. Stronger and More Reliable Than Cast or Machined Parts Compared to cast or machined steel, forging produces a tighter grain structure, reducing its porosity and eliminating the weak points. This results in higher tensile strength, fatigue resistance, and impact toughness, making forged stainless steel the superior choice for parts subjected to mechanical stress or harsh conditions. Exceptional Corrosion and Heat Resistance Industries like aerospace, power generation, and transportation all require materials that can withstand oxidation, extreme temperatures, and corrosive environments. With its inherently high resistance to rust, scaling, and chemical exposure, stainless steel forging ensures long-term performance in conditions where other metals fail. Cost-Effective and Long-Lasting While forging stainless steel may have a higher initial cost than alternative methods, it reduces the need for secondary machining and extends the service life of components. Fewer replacements and lower maintenance costs make it a cost-efficient solution for high-performance applications. Precision Forging Across a Range of Stainless Steel Grades At Canton Drop Forge, we specialize in forging stainless steel components that stand up to high-stress environments, extreme temperatures, and corrosive conditions. Because of our decades of expertise, we're capable of forging a variety of high-performance stainless steels,... --- ### Steel Forging - Published: 2025-03-27 - Modified: 2025-03-27 - URL: https://cantondropforge.com/forging-materials/steel/ Why Steel Forging? The Unmatched Strength of Forged Steel Not all steel is created equal, and forged steel stands in a league of its own. When performance, strength, and durability matter, forging steel is the superior manufacturing method—delivering components that can withstand extreme stress, high temperatures, and heavy loads without failure. At Canton Drop Forge, we use precision-controlled forging techniques to shape steel into high-strength components with superior structural integrity. Unlike cast or machined parts, steel forgings undergo controlled grain refinement, resulting in denser, stronger, and more fatigue-resistant components. Why Choose Forged Steel Over Cast or Machined Steel? What exactly makes forging steel the best choice for high-performance applications? They outperform cast and machined alternatives every time:  Unmatched Strength: The forging process aligns the steel’s internal grain structure with the shape of the part, significantly increasing tensile strength and impact resistance. Superior Durability: Drop-forge steel components can handle high-stress environments with minimal risk of failure, making them ideal for industries that demand reliability. Enhanced Wear Resistance: Forging steel produces parts with greater toughness, reducing wear and tear over time—especially in applications involving heavy loads, friction, and extreme temperatures. Reduced Material Waste: Forging maximizes material efficiency, producing near-net-shape parts that require less machining and result in stronger, more cost-effective components. For industries that require high-performance materials, Canton Drop Forge’s steel forgings provide the strength, durability, and precision that cast and machined components simply can’t match. Steel Grades We Forge: Material Selection for Performance Steel selection isn’t just about strength—it’s about matching... --- ### Forging Materials - Published: 2025-03-13 - Modified: 2025-03-27 - URL: https://cantondropforge.com/forging-materials/ What Are Forging Materials? When crafting precision components, choosing the right forging materials is just as critical as the forging process itself. The properties of each material—such as strength, heat resistance, and corrosion resistance—directly influence the performance and durability of the final product. Forging materials range from carbon and alloy steels to titanium, brass, copper, and high-temperature alloys containing elements like cobalt, nickel, and molybdenum. Each material brings unique characteristics to the table, making it well-suited for specific applications: Titanium excels in applications demanding lightweight strength and corrosion resistance, such as aerospace and chemical processing. Stainless steel offers unmatched durability and resistance to extreme heat and corrosion, making it ideal for marine equipment, gas turbines, and pumps. Carbon alloys provide affordability and excellent mechanical properties for automotive, oil and gas, and high-pressure piping systems. Superalloys, with their ability to withstand extreme heat and maintain strength, are the go-to choice for turbine engines, solar thermal plants, and nuclear reactors. The decision to use specific materials for forging isn’t one-size-fits-all—it’s based on the demands of your industry and application. Common Forging Materials and Their Applications At Canton Drop Forge, we deliver components that meet the most demanding requirements. Let’s take a closer look at four of the primary industrial forge materials we work with and why they excel in high-performance applications. Cross forgings are then normalized, quenched, and tempered at our in house heat treating facility, and tested in our lab to ensure the highest capabilities. The proof is in the numbers. Cross forged steel has an average tensile strength well over 100,000 psi (100 ksi) and is capable of resisting creep, or deformation, when exposed to temperatures as high as 1,000℉. High-stakes production calls for high-performance equipment, and no one understands this better than Canton Drop Forge. All components, including turbine shafts, must be of the highest quality to guarantee that your output never misses the mark. Otherwise, you could run into unwanted delays in production or costly issues. Additionally, your turbine generator shaft could have very different specifications compared to other types of shafts made for generating power. That's why it's crucial that you order a unique, custom shaft that meets the needs of your operations. Fortunately, Canton Drop Forge has you covered. With our flexible shaft design options and dedication to delivering the best products to our clients, we can build an extraordinary turbine shaft that fully synchronizes with all parts of your land based turbine. How Canton Drop Forge's Land Based Turbine Shafts Are Different Generating power from any land-based turbine exposes its various components to harsh elements, including intense temperatures. Most turbine parts are designed to withstand these conditions, but some may lack the structural integrity necessary to keep efficiency at 100 percent. Since a turbine generator shaft is subject to these extreme conditions, and also rotates as breakneck speeds, it's even more important that the shaft is constructed with the highest attention-to-detail. To meet this challenge, Canton Drop Forge makes each turbine shaft with tough alloy steel 4340 material to prevent or reduce the risk of any problems. However, if you... --- ### Turbine Blade: Custom Forged Steam Turbine Blades - Published: 2020-04-29 - Modified: 2024-04-16 - URL: https://cantondropforge.com/turbine-blade-custom-forged-steam-turbine-blades/ Power generation of any kind requires two very important things — qualified professionals to handle the job and powerful equipment and materials that can withstand intense working environments. Because of their hot conditions, power plants with steam turbines are no exception to that rule. It is crucial that all components used can hold up when extracting steam. That's where Canton Drop Forge can help. As a leader in custom forged products for markets ranging from the military and defense industry to transportation, Canton offers one-of-a-kind steam turbine blades that are personalized to each client's specifications. How Our Forged Turbine Blades Handle Steam Turbine Challenges Steam turbine operations are intense, and every turbine blade is subjected to high temperatures and physical stress. If a blade isn't properly designed for extreme heat, the heat can damage it over time and eventually cause a deformation called creep. To avoid this, steam turbine blades must be applied with specific thermal coatings to strengthen the blade. Steam turbine blades can also undergo erosion or corrosion in two different ways — oxide scales at the front of the turbine and droplets of water at the back. Steam Turbine Blade Manufacturing Company Canton Drop Forge is aware of these challenges and we strive to construct each turbine blade with the materials needed to avoid any complications. Our goal is to ensure that every power plant we work with is well-equipped with steam turbine blades that will last for many years to come. These threats can include chemical, biological or even nuclear attacks that can destroy everything in their path, so it's mandatory to have top-quality and reliable anti-ballistic missiles crafted from forged missile parts for effective intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) defense. United States ABM System History Not long after World War II, the United States introduced the Project Wizard anti-ballistic missile system in 1946. Instituted by the U. S. Army Air Force, this ABM system was designed to protect against short or intermediate-range V-2 rockets from Germany. At the same time, a separate anti-missile system called Project Thumper was also introduced. In 1949, Project Thumper was canceled and all funds were funneled into the Boeing Ground-to-Air Pilotless Aircraft (GAPA) Project. Shortly after that, Wizard, Thumper and GAPA were all merged into a project for the CIM-10 Bomarc surface-to-air missile. However, the Wizard ABM system project was revived in 1955 as a new project and was eventually cited by the Air Force in 1957 as the "Top Defense Missile". Current ICBM Defense Systems As of right now, there are four anti-ballistic missile systems in the world – the United States, Russia, Israel and India. The United States' anti-missile system, known as the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense System (GMD) serves to protect the U. S. from restricted nuclear attacks from nations such as North Korea. The military industry is built around dependability, and weaponry is no exception to that concept. That's why U. S. MIM-23 Hawk missiles call for the best in forged missile parts. Made in America, the MIM-23 Hawk is a Surface-to-Air missile (SAM) produced by Raytheon. It first entered the U. S. Army service in 1959 and the United States Marine Corps in 1960. How Is the Hawk Missile Used? Originally, the Hawk was designed to attack low-to-medium flying aircraft. In 1995, the missile received its most recent upgrade — an advanced warhead to improve the Hawk's missile defense system capabilities, allowing it to guard against short-range tactical missiles. While there are various forms of the Hawk, it currently stands at nearly 17 feet high with a 14. 5-inch diameter. One of those crucial parts is the tail rotor hub. Canton Drop Forge has special expertise in forging and supplying rotor parts for helicopters, like the helicopter rotor hub for the Apache helicopter. Get Your Custom Helicopter Rotor Parts from Canton Drop Forge The tail rotor hub counters the torque effect created by the main rotor. Without them the helicopter would spin out of control. A tail rotor hub works to counter the rotation of the main rotor hub and prevents the helicopter from losing orientation. It also rotates small wings called blades. These blades vary in pitch as a way to differentiate the amount of thrust they produce. With this in mind, a pilot can use the tail rotor blade as a rudder for steering by varying the pitch of its blades. The tail rotor and the systems that provide power and control for it are considered critically important for safe flight. As with many parts on a helicopter, the tail rotor, its transmission, and many parts in the drive system are often life-limited, meaning they are arbitrarily replaced after a certain number of flight hours, regardless of condition. Get the Best Rotor Hubs from Canton Drop Forge As with all forms of aerospace, each part affects the others. Dealing with a faulty tail rotor hub puts safety and flight stability at a major risk. The solution is simple: a top-quality forged helicopter tail rotor hub created with you in... --- ### Patriot Missile Landing Page - Published: 2019-12-17 - Modified: 2022-07-12 - URL: https://cantondropforge.com/patriot-missile-part-forging/ What Is A Patriot Missile? But what sets this method apart and makes drop forgings so incredibly strong and tough? There are two key reasons why the process creates such well-built products and is the go-to method for many manufacturers. Drop forging stands as a cornerstone in manufacturing, offering unmatched strength and durability to metal components. This process transforms ordinary metals into high-performance parts essential for industries demanding extreme reliability. Understanding the interplay between strength and toughness of drop forged parts not only highlights its importance but also showcases why Canton Drop Forge leads in this technology. Here, we delve into how these characteristics are imparted to metals and the pivotal role they play in product performance. Understanding The Meaning Of Drop Forged Drop forging is a process that shapes metal into specific forms under high pressure using a die. This technique involves heating the metal until it becomes malleable, then hammering or pressing it into the die's shape as it cools. The drop forging process not only enhances the metal's grain structure but also significantly boosts its strength and toughness. By aligning the grains within the metal, drop forged parts possess enhanced mechanical properties and increased resistance to fatigue, making it indispensable for applications where the failure of components could be catastrophic. So, What Makes Drop Forgings Extra Tough? We all know that drop forging is a common way to manufacture a metal component. But what sets this forging method apart and makes the end product so remarkably strong and tough? There are actually two key reasons why drop forgings create such well-built products and is a go-to process for many industries and manufacturers: predictable grain structure and uniformity. Open-Die Forging - Published: 2018-06-08 - Modified: 2024-04-16 - URL: https://cantondropforge.com/open-vs-closed-die-forging/ - Categories: Forging Info When it comes to deforming metal, there are a few options. But they can generally be classified as either open or closed-die forging. While both utilize the same basic process, they differ when it comes to the use of dies. Let’s go through the definitions and differences. When it comes to contorting and deforming metal, there are multiple techniques that involve die forging. Two of these techniques are open die forging and closed-die forging. While both utilize the same basic processes of heating and deforming metal with calculated force, they differ when it comes to the actual die plates themselves. Let's explore the definitions, the forging process steps, differences and various pros and cons of each die forging process. What Is Open-Die Forging Open-die forging, also known as free forging or smith forging, is the process of striking a hammer to deform a piece of metal, typically placed on a stationary anvil. Another approach is to use compression to press the metal between simple dies. These simple dies are typically flat, semi-round or V-shaped. Regardless of the die shape, the metal is never completely encased in the open-die forging process. The dies hammer or press the metal through a series of repetitions, altering the material until achieving the desired shape. Open-die forging is not recommended for complex shapes, and often requires precision machining and forging equipment to complete the process since the dimensions produced by hammering during the open die forge process can be imprecise. Pros of Open-Die Forging Little or no tooling cost Reduced lead time A variety of size options, from a few centimeters to nearly 100 feet Cons of Open-Die Forging Not suitable for forming intricate, precision parts or other close-tolerance applications Machining is often required to complete open-die forgings Process doesn't always produce... --- ### Canton Drop Forge Attends the Offshore Technology Conference - Published: 2018-05-18 - Modified: 2019-12-04 - URL: https://cantondropforge.com/canton-drop-forge-attends-2018-offshore-technology-conference/ - Categories: CDF News - Tags: #OTC2018 For over two decades, OTC – the Offshore Technology Conference – is where the world’s energy professionals meet to exchange ideas and opinions to advance scientific and technical knowledge for offshore resources and environmental matters. Canton Drop Forge is asking employees to recognize these hazards and make an extra effort to stay safe. Most people in this country think of work hours as the daylight hours from around 8am in the morning until 5pm or so in the evening. However, for various reasons, many employees work a non-standard or “off-shift” schedule. Working “off” hours can expose employees to several additional safety hazards such as increased fatigue, poor lighting, limited supervision, isolation and temperature extremes. “Off-shift” workers tend to have less seniority and experience. Many times, the “off-hours” are used to accomplish unusual tasks that cannot be accomplished during the day shift. Inadequate communication between shifts can lead to misunderstanding of work status. Canton Drop Forge is asking employees to recognize these hazards and make an extra effort to stay safe. Employees should ensure that they get enough sleep, wear appropriate cold weather clothing, maintain a healthy diet, ask for help if unsure of proper work methods and above all “... maintain a culture where safe procedures are followed and taking zero chances, all the time, every day, every shift, even when no one is watching. ” --- ### Forging Materials: Which Do You Need? - Published: 2018-04-10 - Modified: 2024-04-16 - URL: https://cantondropforge.com/forging-materials-comparison/ - Categories: Forging Info - Tags: drop forged steel, forged steel, forging materials, titanium forgings We compare the characteristics of common forging materials used today, including stainless steel, titanium, carbon alloys and superalloys. Forging is a manufacturing process that results in the shaping of metal by using calculated force. Forging is executed with a power hammer or a die during the shaping process to produce the intended design of the forged metal object. Forging also has multiple classifications, identified according to the temperature at which the forging process is being performed. This includes cold forging or hot forging, each offering its own distinct advantages. Forged parts could range in size from less than a kilogram to hundreds of metric tons and be customized to fit any shape or size desired. What Is The Difference Between Cold and Hot Forging? Cold forging is a forging process that is performed at room temperature. To deliver a finished product, this process includes rolling, drawing, pressing, spinning, extruding and heading. The benefits of cold forging include the fact that cold forged parts require very little finishing work which helps save on production costs. Hot forging, meanwhile, is performed at extremely high temperatures--up to 1,150 degrees Celsius. The benefits of hot forging include the metal being more flexible and easier to work with than cold forging, allowing more customized parts to be manufactured due to this malleability. What Is Drop Forging? Drop forging refers to a method of closed die drop forging where a heated steel billet is placed on a lower die mold block. While overhead, the die-equipped ram hammer drives down, or drops down, forcing the metal to fill the contours of the two die blocks.... --- ### Canton Drop Forge is Proud to Announce Partnership with Kropp Forge - Published: 2018-03-20 - Modified: 2024-04-16 - URL: https://cantondropforge.com/canton-drop-forge-is-proud-to-announce-partnership-with-kropp-forge/ - Categories: CDF News - Tags: Canton Drop Forge, Kropp Forge Canton Drop Forge is proud to announce a partnership with Kropp Forge. A quick search reveals any number of metallurgical firms that can create said part for you, but their methods of doing so vary. Some create castings and other forgings, and the difference between Forging and Casting may not be immediately apparent if this is your first time in this situation. You want a part that’s going to be reliable and durable, one that’s going to contribute to the excellence of your product or project. Forging vs casting? Which process is more suited to create the part you need at the quality you desire? Find out below! What is Casting? The core of casting is in heating the component metal to a molten state and pouring it into a prepared mold. Though the mold is most often a die, sand and investment casting are often used for specific alloys or for parts with unusual dimensions and design. Once the metal cools into the basic desired shape, the metalworker then finishes the part with the details requested by the client either by hand or through further machining. What is Forging? Though the heating of the component metal is also essential to forging, heating for this method never gets so intense as to make said metal melt. Instead, it’s merely made hot enough to make it possible for the metalworker to conduct hammer... --- ### Why is it Important To Forge A Prototype? - Published: 2017-11-30 - Modified: 2017-11-30 - URL: https://cantondropforge.com/why-forge-a-prototype/ - Categories: Uncategorized Why is It Important To Forge a Prototype? Our current world is faced with considering the role of machines and our tools of production a forefront of discussion as robotic processes are an ever-expanding influence upon our society. One of the most important tasks companies face is how to make a functioning prototype of their product. While having blueprints, sketches, renderings, and videos is a good first step, if you're looking to get products or concepts into manufacturing you definitely need a prototype. Prototypes can be effective in speeding up the design of a part, in helping to bridge any gap that may exist between the design and the manufacturing processes. It can also help to mitigate any risks involved in moving ahead to mass production. When evaluating products or solutions, forged prototypes fill the gap in the between simulations, 3D models and the manufactured end product. There are two general types of forged prototypes which serve a variety of purposes: soft and hard metal. Soft prototypes are made from materials such as wood, foam, and plastic, and are not suitable for functional testing. As their name implies, hard metal prototypes are made from metal. Their usefulness as functional testing pieces of equipment depends on the extent to which their critical properties are like those of the forged end product. In the end, the only way to produce a prototype that has the same properties as the forging is by forging with production tools. The cost and lead time associated... --- ### History of Modern Forge Hammers - Published: 2017-09-18 - Modified: 2024-04-16 - URL: https://cantondropforge.com/history-of-modern-forging-hammers/ - Categories: Forging Info In the 19th century, forging hammers evolved into similar designs that we still use today. Check out some of the history behind the steam hammer. Forging has been around for centuries and the 19th century marked an important turning point leading into modern day techniques that are still being used today. James Hall Nasmyth is credited for the invention of the steam hammer with his patent in June 1842 which began a new era for forging. Steam Hammers A steam hammer uses high-pressure steam to rise and power the ram to strike the part being forged. Several, perhaps many blows, are used for the parts to achieve the proper dimensions and metallurgical properties required by the customer. Mechanical and Hydraulic Forging Hammers Other closed-die forging processes include mechanical and hydraulic presses. Mechanical presses are found when forging small parts in high volume. Hydraulic presses, including hydraulic screw presses, can be used with all types of materials, but have found growing usage in the super-alloy and titanium markets primarily for the aerospace market. Automated Forging Process Many forging processes can now be automated with computers, streamlining the process and making for quick and precise parts for industries like aerospace and transportation. A process that was developed thousands of years ago, forging remains one of the most effective ways to produce metal parts for critical applications. --- ### The AS9100:2009 Certification - Published: 2017-07-18 - Modified: 2024-04-16 - URL: https://cantondropforge.com/importance-of-as9100-certification/ - Categories: Forging Info AS9100 is a widely accepted and standardized quality management system for the aerospace industry. Machinability is how easily a metal material can be cut or machined. After forging, virtually all parts are machined to remove excess material and provide the final shape and dimensions. How Machinability is Determined The American Iron and Steel Institute adapted ratings for metal materials that determine their machinability. The weighted average of normal cutting speed, surface finish, and tool life are calculated for each material to determine machinability. Materials that have a less than 100% rating are more difficult to machine and ratings higher than 100% is easier. Machinability of Stainless Steels Stainless steel is known as a steel alloy, containing a minimum of 10. 5% chromium with a strong resistance to corrosion. Although typically harder to machine than carbon or alloy steels, stainless steels are ideal for high-stress environments, including gas turbines. Simulation can include the design of the die, raw material needed, size and shape, temperature, equipment, and several other factors. This process helps identify possible problems before a project starts including inaccurate temperatures for material, unexpected material costs, and stress issues. Simulating a custom forged part before the start of a project has several advantages compared to starting without simulating. Project Completion Before the onset of a project, forging simulations will help determine the cost, a timeline, and most importantly, whether or not the forging company can design a part. One of the most important and obvious questions asked before the forging process is “Can you forge my part? ” It’s a question that needs answering before forging can begin to avoid project timeline issues and ultimate failure of a custom forged part. Simulating the forging of a client’s part will allow a forging company to determine if they have the right equipment, time, and material to accurately complete the project. Without simulation, the forging process could be several weeks into production before determining that a project a will fail. Cost Effective Creating a forging simulation before the start of a project will help reduce the cost of material due to inaccurate specs. A more accurate amount of material can be ordered, still leaving room for marginal mistakes and reducing the overall cost of the project for the client. This means a... --- ### New Employee Safety Point System - Published: 2017-05-23 - Modified: 2017-05-23 - URL: https://cantondropforge.com/new-employee-safety-point-system/ - Categories: CDF News With the implementation of our new Safety Point Reward System, CDF employees have the chance to earn gift cards and company branded gifts for adhering to safety guidelines. A forging company has to be able to make your part on time, within budget, and create a professional environment for communication and collaboration. Here are the top five questions to ask a steel forging company before you partner with them on your next custom forging project. What raw metal material does your forging company keep an inventory of? Often, steel forging companies will order raw metal as needed for projects and not keep them on hand. This can be cost effective for the forging company but can slow the timeline of your project down significantly if raw materials need to be ordered. Certain industries can require time-sensitive timelines for forging projects and cannot afford delays due to out of stock alloys. Ensure that the forging company you partner with has a healthy stock of alloys and raw materials on a regular basis. What steps of the forging process are outsourced? There are several steps during the forging process, and many times, it makes sense for certain parts of a project to be outsourced to another company. Outsourcing steps like machining, shipping, and packaging might be more cost effective, or the forging company has a strong partnership with another company to help get a project done quickly and within scope. When partnering with a steel forging company, be sure that they have a good reason for outsourcing any step... --- ### The History of Forging Techniques - Published: 2017-02-03 - Modified: 2019-06-24 - URL: https://cantondropforge.com/history-of-forging/ - Categories: Forging Info Learn how early civilizations paved the way for how we forge today, creating new techniques and discovering new ways to move the industry forward. Forging, at a basic level, is the technique of shaping metal pieces using heat and force, often with a hammer, into parts for machines, tools and weapons. The art of forging and metalworking is found in human culture as early as 4,500 B. C. In the early years of forging, settlements in Mesopotamia were known to use copper to create hand tools and weapons for survival. Small wood burning fires and rocks were used to heat up the metal before pounding it into its desired shaped. Soon after other metals were discovered, leading the way for stronger weapons and tools. By 1,000 B. C. , forging techniques and metals had spread throughout Europe and the rest of the old world. Blacksmithing During 1,200-1,000 B. C. as forging grew to be an essential part of human civilization, the term smith or blacksmith emerged. During this period, Smith’s in the West forged wrought iron using charcoal fires and bellows to increase the heat of the fire and a hammer to bend, cut and shape the metal into arrowheads, knives, scrapers, tools and even artwork. By this point, forging and metal production had spread throughout China and became a part of everyday life. Bloomery Furnace During the iron-age, bloomery furnaces rapidly replaced open charcoal fires as an effective way to forge. These furnaces or pits were made of clay and stone and were designed to be heat-resistant, built with pipes referred to as tuyeres. These tuyeres were used to force air into the... --- ### Closed-Die Drop Forging - Published: 2017-02-03 - Modified: 2024-04-16 - URL: https://cantondropforge.com/what-is-drop-forging/ - Categories: Forging Info Canton Drop Forge is one of the industry leaders in manufacturing closed-die forgings. Learm more about this process and its advantages in the production of high-performance parts. In the closed-die drop forging process, metal blanks, or billets, are heated to perhaps as high as 2,200F depending on grade, and then either pounded by hammers or squeezed by presses with dies that contain an impression of the shape of the final forging. Closed-die drop forging is a popular process in the forging industry for the creation of tools, aerospace parts, turbine blades, and other high-performance steel parts. How Closed-Die and Drop Forging Works The hammer forging process is also called drop forging. In drop forging, steam, compressed air, hydraulic power, steam or rollers raise the ram to which the dies are attached and then drop it at high speed onto the heated billet. The energy for forging is provided by gravity or assisted by the energy source used to raise the ram. Many blows may be used to provide a part with the final forge shape and dimensions. Advantages of Drop Forging The process of hot working metals has been used for thousands of years to improve strength, toughness, reliability and the highest quality. In casting, another metal forming process, the material is melted and then poured. The casting process does not provide grain densification or the grain flow delivered by forging that gives the part improved properties. Once a part is tooled with impression dies to the specifications of the part to be made, consistent forgings can be made consistently and cost-effectively. Closed-die forging is the process commonly used to make turbine blades, vanes, gear blanks, pinions,... --- ### Closed Die Forgings - Published: 2017-02-03 - Modified: 2024-04-16 - URL: https://cantondropforge.com/why-closed-die-forgings/ - Categories: Forging Info Learn about the closed die forging process and its advantages over other metal forming processes. When the need arises for high-performance metal parts for critical applications, forgings will provide the needed high strength, dependability, reliability and peace-of-mind. Drop forging is a process where metal is pressed or pounded with a hammer to refine and provide directional flow to the grain structure of the metal to improve physical properties. Forgings are almost always used where reliability and human safety are critical for parts used in markets such as aerospace, missiles, off-highway construction and mining, power generation, high-pressure oil field applications and the like. When compared to castings, die forgings provide better strength, ductility, and toughness. A casting has neither the grain flow nor directional strength provided with a forging. Dendritic structures, alloy segregations and porosity found in a casting are refined in forging. There are several types of forgings and processes, including closed-die forgings, open-die forgings, ring-rolling, and other forging methods. Each of these methods offers different benefits and nuances that can impact the final part. Different manufacturers may specialize in different forms of forgings, so knowing the differences and advantages of the different processes is important. What are Closed-Die Forgings? In the closed-die or impression-die forging process, upper and lower dies are configured to the dimensional specifications of the part and a metal billet is then hammered or pressed between the dies after being heated to specified temperatures. Other Advantages of Closed-Die Forgings For higher volume production, closed-die forgings have a decisive cost advantage over open-die forgings. Less machining is needed after forging since metal... --- ### Advancing Culture Safety Forging Industry - Published: 2017-02-03 - Modified: 2019-12-04 - URL: https://cantondropforge.com/advancing-culture-safety-forging-industry/ - Categories: CDF News Canton Drop Forge is striving to improve the safety of the work environment for employees by working with the Ohio Burea of Workers Compensation and their grant program. One of the ways we accomplish this is to constantly evaluate processes and equipment to work more safely. Canton Drop Forge received a $28,410 from the Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation (BWC) Safety Intervention Grant Program to provide a safer work environment and to reduce or eliminate injuries primarily associated with lifting and material handling tasks. Safety Changes Made in our Forging Plant Specifically, we implemented changes in three areas to help eliminate strains, sprains and minor burns by changing the lifting devices and controls. First, an overhead crane was retrofitted with a remote control to allow the operator to work at a safe distance while stacking dies. Second, a new crane system was installed to allow for easy articulation of parts instead of working against the natural momentum of the part. Third, a crane was motorized to prevent manually moving red-hot parts. The Ohio BWC provided $15 million of grants to 680 Ohio employers for roughly 709 projects. Grants up to $40,000 are offered, as long as the company provides 25% of the project cost. Safety Crucial to Canton Drop Forge's Culture Safety is one of our core values where following safe procedures and taking zero chances is part of the everyday culture. --- ### Water Tower Removal - Published: 2017-02-03 - Modified: 2019-12-04 - URL: https://cantondropforge.com/water-tower-removal/ - Categories: CDF News Canton Drop Forge will be taking down the iconic water tower that has displayed the company logo for over 60 years. Canton Drop Forge has decided to remove the 100,000-gallon aerial water tower due to its age and condition. The iconic tower, with its red Canton logo has been seen by many as they travel across Route 30. The tank, which supplies water for steam generation and process water for the plant has been in operation for over 60 years. Undergoing many repairs and rebuilds over the years, the tank was determined to be past its useful life. The decision was made to replace the tank with a ground level tank of the same size. CDF contracted with International Tank Service in Lima, Ohio to construct and install the 100,000-gallon replacement tank, followed by the final coating, painting, and installation of supply lines, which were completed in April 2016. Eslich Wrecking Company is performing the work for CDF, which includes removal of a large girder crane in the same location as the tower. This crane was used to service a rail siding that was removed from CDF many years ago and has not been in operation for quite some time. The space where both of these structures reside will be repurposed to improve traffic flow at the facility and for better-organized storage. I am sure the employees of Canton Drop Forge, both past and present, will certainly miss seeing this landmark of our company as they come to work or travel across Route 30. --- ### John Fiddler of CDF and JS Safe Haven - Published: 2017-02-03 - Modified: 2017-02-14 - URL: https://cantondropforge.com/john-fiddler-js-safe-haven/ - Categories: CDF News Read about John Fiddler, a Canton Drop Forge Shop employee who operates the nonprofit JS Safe Haven. Below are answers to some frequently asked questions that can help you with your decision to partner with Canton Drop Forge. What is forging? Forging is one of the oldest known metalworking processes involving the shaping of metal using localized compressive forces. The forces are typically delivered with a hammer or press. Forging is often classified according to the temperature at which it is performed: cold forging which is a type of cold working, warm forging, or hot forging. For the latter two, the metal is heated in a gas or induction furnace but remains in a solid state. Forged parts can range in weight from less than a kilogram to hundreds of metric tons. Forging has been done by smiths for centuries; with traditional forging products included kitchenware, hardware, hand tools, edged weapons and the like. Forged parts since the Industrial Revolution have been widely used in equipment and machines wherever a component requires high strength and toughness. These forgings usually require further processing, such as machining, to achieve a finished part. Why is forging better than other processes? See our article on Why a Forging. What kind of forging process do we use? Canton Drop Forge uses large steam-powered hammers to produce closed-die and open-die parts. What kinds of metal materials do we forge?
