Forged Components for Naval Ships and Submarines

Canton Drop Forge manufactures naval vessel forgings for critical parts across a hull’s propulsion train, each one forged to stringent performance criteria and to your program’s exact specifications:

  • Shafts for propulsion and steering systems
  • Gears for propulsion and power transmission
  • Hubs for propulsion assemblies
  • Couplings for shaft-to-shaft power transfer
  • Custom naval forgings manufactured to customer specifications, material requirements, and tolerances

Canton Drop Forge uses closed-die forging to manufacture durable, high-performance components in carbon and alloy steels, tailored to customer design and application requirements.

Naval Ship Forging and Submarine Forging

Surface ship and submarine programs each have specific application, material and performance requirements. Canton Drop Forge manufactures closed-die forgings for naval applications to meet customer drawings, specifications and program requirements.

CDF supports shipbuilding and defense applications with in-house inspection and non-destructive testing capabilities, along with established quality systems and manufacturing certifications.

We manufacture naval forgings from the same Ohio facility for both surface ship and submarine programs, and can move from a single prototype run to higher-volume production once a program enters the build phase.

Naval Propulsion Shaft Forging

Canton Drop Forge manufactures propulsion shaft forgings for naval vessels to meet customer and program specifications. Our naval propulsion shaft forging work starts with the same closed-die process behind our full forging program: 13 forging hammers, in-house heat treatment, and precision machining, giving us the in-house capability to move a shaft from raw forging through heat treatment, machining, and inspection., meet budget targets, and stay ahead of schedule.

Prototype Development and Legacy Part Support

Naval vessels remain in service for decades, and sourcing replacement forgings for legacy components requires a manufacturing partner who can work from the documentation available. Canton Drop Forge’s engineering team reviews customer prints and specifications to develop a prototype forging ahead of committing to a full production run. by American-made quality and a commitment to your projects.

Materials and Traceability

Canton Drop Forge manufactures forgings in carbon and alloy steels for demanding shipbuilding and defense applications, with documentation and traceability provided based on customer and program requirements.  Our quality systems, ISO 9001 and AS9100D, and our Nadcap-accredited heat treating carry through naval work the same way they do across our defense and shipbuilding programs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Naval Vessel Forgings

Do you supply finished, machined naval forgings, or only rough forgings?

Both, depending on the program. Some naval orders come to us as rough forgings that ship to a customer’s own machine shop for final machining. Others come with the full sequence, forging through precision machining and inspection, done in-house before the part ships.

What documentation comes with a naval forgings order?

Naval forgings orders from Canton Drop Forge include material certification and full lot traceability, with material test reports tied back to heat and lot number.

Can you forge naval components in materials other than carbon and alloy steel?

Canton Drop Forge manufactures forgings in carbon and alloy steels and also has forging capabilities for stainless steels and nickel-based superalloys. Material selection is based on the specifications and requirements of the application.  If a naval application calls for one of those, talk to our engineering team about the specification.
