Kristine Whitacre, Jackson High School’s Materials Chemistry teacher and 19 students recently toured Canton Drop Forge (CDF), Timken Steel and AZZ. Students were allowed to observe several local industrial processes related to materials science. At CDF they learned why forgings are preferential to castings, concepts of grain flow, heat treating, normalizing and quench and tempering. They also learned about quality testing and engineering modeling.
